The Mega Drive II is simply an overhaul in looks, however it does have some significant changes to it's predecessor. The reason for this remake is simple, the design of the original Mega Drive became dated and the Mega Drive II saved on plastic moulding costs (Less little plastic sliders and such to make per console). However it did boast a few improvements.
The Mega Drive I could only create mono sound, stereo sound was available but only through the console's headphone jack. The Mega Drive II supported stereo sound as standard, as such the headphone jack disappeared completely.
Also the styling of the console (In European and American versions) was altered to be less bulky, the thick plastic sliders seen noticably in Eighties Sci-Fi (See the Death Star in Star Wars with it's "futuristic" huge clicky buttons and sliders) were gone and replaced with more simplistic push-buttons. The Mega Drive had become, for the time, much more modern.
It even had a Mega CD addition built specifically to fit into the newer look. This design held until 1998, and is widely recognised as the last version of the Mega Drive iterations.
